The Argus, event guide for October's The Space

"My problem is that, in England, people applaud new bands, but they forget that new music can come from anywhere...If you’re just obsessed about new bands, you don’t give careers to rock musicians who get better and change with age like painters. We’re artists, we go through one period in our teens, then our 30s, 50s and 80s – it’s all vibrant and fantastic and it’s all necessary.” Skin from Skunk Anansie

"Had fun at The Space tonight, thanks everyone for coming down and to the lovely staff who looked after me so well. Was great to meet & chat with cinematographer Brian Tufano, what an interesting man, told us some great stories."

Thank you to Skin for her kind words, and to Brian Tufano for yet another wonderful event.

INTERVIEW: Writer and producer Brian Clemens

What a wonderful chap. Brian Clemens chuckled and plugged his way through our interview with ease, like the seasoned pro that he is. Renowned for the ever-so classy handling of his slice of UK cult-televisual pie, most would say it was The Avengers; that quaint, idiosyncratic upper-class British adventure-cum sci-fi production, that Brian's name would ring most familiar. Not the only celebrity in the family, Brian is permitted to boast about his achievements; he even has a medal to show for it all...

The following interview was broadcast on The Geekend, Radio Reverb on 10th September 2011.

LIVE MUSIC FROM TOM GRAY OF GOMEZ

Every week, with my two awesome friends audio mover-shaker Wayne and the filmically au fait James, we put together the highly acclaimed The Geekend radio show.

From what was just a miniscule acorn of a brilliant idea, cycle six months later, and we can boast shows and guests that honestly make me need to pinch myself to make sure I'm not stuck in some Matrix style machine-dream (check out the list further down this post).

But this week's show was one of my most enjoyable. To celebrate The Persuaders! 40th anniversary, I got to interview Brian Clemens, the fine fellow writer/producer of it (and a right royal British shed load more). But we were also very lucky to be graced with the presence of one fifth of Mercury Music Prize winning band Gomez, in the form of Tom Gray. Now, ashamedly I thought I didn't know any of their music. So when his dulcet tones burst out these magical musical poems (Flyaway Katie in particular), well I was most impressed. Post event I popped on to Spotify to discover what a numpty I was as Gomez are a band who you may not think you know, but actually, it's impossible not to recognise Whippin' Piccadilly or Options. I totally retract the pub admission Tom.

INTERVIEW: Actor, David Prowse

The iconic role of Darth Vader may have been the performance that brought David to his height of fame, but this chap is a character himself. Having played an exhibition of monsters and heavies throughout film and British cult TV, from The Saint to Doctor Who, The Tomorrow People to a flirtation with comedy in the Morecambe & Wise Show, perhaps David was always destined to portray the similitude of a cinematic god.

The following interview was broadcast on The Geekend, Radio Reverb on 3rd September 2011.

GG: You are the man behind the mask of Darth Vader; the light-saber wielding, hand severing, Obi-Wan slaying, Dark Lord of Star Wars. Now I’m sure all avid Star Wars fans know this inside out including myself, but for the benefit of our listeners, how did you get the part of the galaxy’s most feared super-villain; Darth Vader?

INTERVIEW: Battlestar Galactica's Richard Hatch

With his Hollywood-white teeth on constant display, Richard Hatch, star of Battlestar Galactica, gave me some of his time amid the hustle and bustle of the visitors to this years London Film and Comic Con. With appearances in 70s shows such as Hawaii 5-0 and The Waltons, it was a science fiction series that was to launch his career to an all new cosmic orbit. Richard played Apollo on the good star-ship Battlestar Galactica from 1978-79. Set light-years in the future, fine and upstanding Captain Apollo, the ever-spirited space fighter pilot, ventures through space with the rest of the post-apocalyptic human survivors from decades of warring with the Cylons (a cybernetic race hell-bent on the destruction of the human population), in search of a new, fabled homeland called Earth.

Over twenty years later, after attempts to bring about another breath of life into the premise of Glenn Larson's original, Richard then reprised his involvement with the franchise becoming the terrorist-turned-politician Tom Zarek in the fantastic 2004 reimagined adaptation

INTERVIEW: Doctor Who's Carole Ann Ford

The year is 1963 and a young girl of just 23 years of age embarks on a journey of a life time. In a little blue box, accompanied by authoritative actor William Hartnell, both sign up to what is pitched as a children's series so influential, over 40 years later, is still going strong around the globe. Of course I am referring to Doctor Who; that cult British television staple.

On 16th July 2011, I interviewed actress Carole Ann Ford after she paid her Doctor Who DNA dues, carrying out a signing session for Doctor devotees of all ages, celebrating the release of four new Doctor Who classic novelisations. Despite the soggy London air, the queue of fandom well surpassed the alloted one hour, concluding that said 'childrens series' had definitely shed it's blue stabilisers. I discovered that Carole will be joining the rest of us as new episodes are aired, with a fervid layer of reverence, even a sonic screwdriver couldn't penetrate...

INTERVIEW: Mark Waring at Empire Big Screen

I’m turning this introduction upside down a little, by opening with a brief background to the iconic screen animator and inventor of animation technique Dynamation; Ray Harryhausen. I attended Empire’s Big Screen (the magazine’s virgin three-day event celebrating all things filmic) with a leap in my heart when I spotted that there was to be a panel dedicated to the celebration of this man. I grew up with white knuckles watching Jason ward off the sword wielding Skeleton’s and followed every silent fatalistic footstep Harry Hamlin took evading Medusa’s stony gaze in Clash of the Titans (1981). Even now watching the films again, I chuckle with delight when I discover Doctor Who’s Tom Baker moonlighting as an evil sorcerer in The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973).

This nonagenarian was responsible for no less than 16 feature films, and like one of his monsters, his influence spiders off into a web of notoriety inspiring the likes of Steven Spielberg to James Cameron, with some of the most magical creature creations ever seen on screen. All with personality and character; the magic that truly brought these stop-frame models to life, made the viewer believe what they were seeing could actually be real, in some far flung corner of the world that many of the characters ventured to.

It was at this panel where I met marvellous model-manipulator Mark Waring. Mark was a guest speaker on stage, citing Harryhausen as an inspiration in his very successful career as an animator. Here is my interview with him post-panel...

INTERVIEW: Author, Alwyn W Turner

As part of my reporter/ contributor role as Geek Girl on the radio show The Geekend, I was really chuffed to get Alwyn W Turner as my first on-air interview. I'd like to thank him for being a wonderful guest and for writing his latest book; 'The Man Who Invented the Daleks: The Strange Worlds of Terry Nation', which I devoured and also reviewed on the live broadcast. I think I can now remove my supportive third wheel, as my journalistic vehicle steps up a gear. After reading my interview with him, I would also highly recommend popping over to his personal website, which is a really good read in itself.

SEASIDE DINOSAUR ATTACK!

Okay, okay, so that's not strictly true.

Well, unless of course you have a very vivid child like imagination, which we all once had (I have desperately tried to hang on to mine). So when a mere excursion to buy a dress collided with a slice of my favourite film; Jurassic Park - well, I was in a momentary, somewhat abstract version of heaven.

Predating the 1086 Domesday Book, ye olde 'Brighthelmstone', or Brighton as you may know it today, is constantly surprising me. A source of many a chuckle from the myriad of weird and eccentric residents, to the open arms it provides for all forms of art and adventure, with the powerful summer city pulls of seaside and scintillating entertainment; it really is 'the place to be'. But if you need a little more convincing, here is a shining example of how even the blandest part of Brighton; the shopping mall, gets involved with the fun with a prehistoric flash-back...

INTERVIEW: Buck Roger's Erin Gray at LFCC with 'The Guild' exclusive!

On Sunday 10th July I attended the London Film and Comic Con 2011. You can read my full account of it here, but one of my absolute highlights from the weekend was meeting Erin Gray. With a background hum of R2D2 tweets and the crowd of avids milling about the Earl's Court 2 arena, a beacon of beauty in the form of Buck Rogers' very own starlet Willma Deering, kindly gave me a few minutes of her time to talk about the cult 80s TV classic as well as a web series exclusive that I cannot wait for! Here is my audio file, plus the transcript...enjoy!

DOCTOR WHO SIGNING @ FORBIDDEN PLANET, LONDON

I love Forbidden Planet. The magical hive of merchandise from the 'cult cream of movies and television' makes my heart flutter a little every time I step foot in one of their stores. From the beautiful to the bizarre, I wish to covet 90% of what they sell. But I'd never taken advantage of one of their exclusive signing events until this weekend. Mainly because a signature is just that; a signature. Instead I have always personally treasured the value of holding a conversation with said luminary, perhaps also a photo to capture that megapixel memory vividly; the setting, the clothes, the facial expressions, that moment of (I hope) happiness. It's just how I roll.

So I hopped, skipped and tripped the Brighton-to-London fantastic with the aim of meeting Carole for a time more generous than fleeting. I travelled up with friend and presenter of The Geekend (radio show that I contribute to weekly) Wayne. It took me a whole hour to realise when he says 'I know exactly where we are, we are just 2 minutes away', that he is indeed, navigationally challenged, and an impressive bluffer. Not the best discovery when the heavens decide it is time to water the mortals. So we eventually arrived, on time (just, as we set off super early, we both hate being late), looking like drowned rats. A secondary dowsing of juice all over my dress (clumsy moment) and a snaking-queue-of-doom later, I was soon stood in front of an all star Doctor Who line-up:

LONDON FILM AND COMIC CON 2011

Oh what fun. It's definitely convention fever what with Kapow! popping it's cherry back in April and fan boy mecca San Diego kicking off on 21st July.

London Film and Comic Con 2011 sandwiches nicely between the two, held at London's Earls Court over the course of three days.

Now, I've been to a few conventions now, and I am happy to report that LFCC was, by far, the medal winner for star access and star turnout. Row upon row of desks, row upon row of stellar sci-fi and fantasy names, I honestly didn't have time to meet them all! The only exceptions to this rule were Doctor Who hot property Karen Gillan and Alex Kingston, who were strictly shepherded to and from the stage, with no brazen photo ops in between (unless you paid the princely sum of £15+).

It wasn't all pleasure for me though as I worked hard, running a live Twitter feed for all who couldn't attend, with as many of the juicy exclusives and surprise moments to come out of the panels that my typing ability would allow. Any faster and there may have been smoke.

My highlight's included:
  • Voice of Doctor Who's K-9; John Leeson doing his finest K-9 for me
  • Having Brent Spiner wave finger guns at me as we passed each other
  • Singing 'Happy Birthday' (along with the rest of the audience) to Corey Feldman, who celebrated his 40th birthday on the day of his panel
  • 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy showing me to my seat as I budged up to get closer to the action.
  • The life size R2D2 replicas that were scooting around causing mischief

Skunk Anansie's Skin has confirmed for our October event

Skin confirmed for The Space event, posted by Kerensa BryantWE RETURN ON THURSDAY OCTOBER 6TH TO KOMEDIA WITH TWO MORE GREAT GUESTS INCLUDING ROCK SINGER, DJ AND ICON – SKIN

A groundbreaking presence, Skin is one of Britain’s leading female rock singers, having made a huge impact with Skunk Anansie. She is also a fashion icon, a renowned DJ, a charity activist, and an inspiring role model for different generations of fans.

After giving up her career as an interior designer to write songs and devote herself to music, she played in bands in the London indie scene before forming Skunk Anansie. Within a year after their first gig, they were voted Best New British Band by the readers of Kerrang! In 1997 they were nominated for Best Live Act and Best Group at the MTV Europe Music Awards. The latter 90s saw them dominating the UK album chart with their top twenty albums: Paranoid and Sunburnt, Stoosh and Post Orgasmic Chill. The decade saw them achieving ten top forty hit singles, including Weak and Hedonism (Just Because You Feel Good). Skunk Anansie toured globally with such acts as U2, Aerosmith and Lenny Kravitz, and headlined Glastonbury in 1999. In 2001, however, they split up.

Skin later launched a solo career, releasing and touring the albums Fleshwounds in 2003 and Fake Chemical State in 2006. Spawning the hit single Trashed, Fleshwounds was a pared-down, soulful album. Skunk Anansie reformed in 2009 and the same year they released a greatest hits album. In 2010, they recorded their fourth album, the sensual and funky Wonderlustre.

As well as fronting one of the UK’s key rock bands, Skin is a multi-talented artist involved in varied projects. She is also an established DJ, playing house and rock. She has modelled for top fashion designers, such as Alexander McQueen and Gucci. Skin does a lot of charity work, from The Medical Foundation and the Baobab Foundation, charities that focus on torture victims and asylum seekers.

We are 5 years old!

The Space is 5 years old!
Bravo to all involved in making The Space events the fabulously, highly acclaimed triumphs that they have become.

We would like to thank everyone who have played their part over the years, and especially to anyone who has attended one of the events, we do what we do, for you all.

Please remember that The Space is a 'not-for-profit' event and it is purely through ticket sales that we have survived this long. Well that, and lest we forget the amazing Wayne Imms; founder of The Space, his sheer determination, passion and organisational skills that warrant Indiana Jones: Raider's of the Lost Ark Art Director Norman Reynolds to hail: "Wayne, you deserve an Oscar".

Hear, hear! Three cheers to The Space team. May we all live long and creatively prosper.

Clare Grogan & Richard Klein

Kerensa Bryant meets Clare Grogan at The Space, Komedia
Richard Klein and Clare Grogan joined us this month for our February event in the intimate Studio Bar at Komedia. Juice Radio’s Guy Lloyd kindly stepped up to the mic, presenting the event which also marked Richard as our 100th Space guest! A truly engaging acumen of an evening transpired…

Young And The Restless

Researching Clare was easy. Let’s see, there’s the repeated success with 80s pop band Altered Images. Check. Then there’s her part she played in the cult 80s coming-of-age Brit-flick; Gregory’s Girl (rated 30 in the BFI Top 100 British films). Check. Most currently, there’s her second children’s book to come out of the trilogy; Tallulah and the TeenStars. Check. And to mirror her original rise to fame, you can now catch her cameo in the latest series of Skins on E4; the gritty teen-ripening drama, she plays cheeky-stop-out anti-role model mum to the main character Mini. Check.

I get it. She’s one multi-talented lady. But this dainty doll before me barely seems to have aged from what I witnessed as I journeyed through YouTube interview clips and many a pop video from yesteryear. Everything about Clare is femme. Her voice, her pint-sized stature, her cheeky nods to her band-mate husband and anecdotes about trying to meet boys as a teen, with ladylike composure sitting on stage. Bound by youth, Clare let us in on her lottery-kismet to fame, and how she originally became the sylphlike quarter of Altered Images and falling into her first attempt as a singer: “I went to an all-girls school so meeting boys wasn’t easy. [On attending her first band audition] None of the boys were brave enough to sing, so I thought being in a band, well this could be the first step into meeting boys. We didn’t do very much other than pretend we were Siouxsie and the Banshees in the hope we would pull something off – which we did! Tony was the talent and I had the ambition, you could say.”

David Morrissey & Toby Whithouse

Kerensa Bryant meets Being Human writer Toby Whithouse
My name is Kerensa Creswell-Bryant, and I’m a Being Human addict. There, I’ve said it. Since the first trailer for series one aired back in 2009, I’ve been under the series’ spell. After all what is there not to love about a high-concept comedy-drama based on the controversies of the human condition and the mystical lore trappings of a ghost, werewolf and vampire cohabiting in a two-up, two-down in Bristol? Not to mention a cast of three of the UK’s most talented rising stars and hot off the press confirmation that there is to be a spin-off?

Possibly two of the sharpest dressers ever to have graced The Space stage and both with impressive links to the Doctor Who franchise, actor David Morrissey and Being Human writer Toby Whithouse charmed us and edified us with their personal ascents to stellar heights…

The writer, the pun and the agoraphobic ghost

Suited, booted and looking dapper in suit and tie, creative virtuoso Toby Whithouse comes across as a natural to the limelight, as he is passed a mic and begins an evening with us at Komedia, Brighton.  BBC Three, the channel that deems itself ‘The digital TV channel that’s never afraid to try something new’ has stood up to its title, having given great support to Toby and Being Human, since the initial pilot stage which, although initially pipped to the commissioning post by another series (Phoo Action, anyone?), was received so well by the UK viewers it caused an online frenzy, setting chat forums and message boards aflame with such lust even Nosferatu and his pallid tones would have blushed.
